Pulpwood loads to fit your N scale gondolas...
In the back bedroom of my house in Lansing, Michigan, I'm operating a short-line railroad that supposedly is located in the northern lower peninsula of my state. The traffic mix is heavy on grain and wood products. There are two wood lots and a wood chipping operation so a lot of pulpwood moves on this line. (Check out the photo of pulpwood being switched on my West Huron and Traverse line). To haul all that pulpwood I originally obtained several bulkhead end flats, to represent the loads I bought a couple plaster pulpwood castings to fit the flats. But when the castings arrived I was a little disappointed, I didn't really like the looks of them. I did what most of us long term model railroaders would do...I started making my own pulpwood loads using natural materials.
After running my string of bulkhead end flats for a while, I remembered a trip through the Upper Peninsula of Michigan where I saw strings of gondolas lined up on the Soo Line. The cars were loaded with 8 foot lengths of pulpwood with wood poles at each end holding the logs on. Next thing you know I've got a fleet of gondolas loaded with pulpwood in that style.
Here, take a look at a couple of my N scale loads and see them for yourself...

I knew I had something when I took one of my loaded gondolas to work to show some of the modelers there what I had done. One of the ladies that I work with saw the loaded car and said without prompting - 'Hey Bob, that looks just like pulpwood from the UP. That's really good, looks just like I remember". When I heard her say that the loads looked 'real', I figured I was onto something and decided to offer my loads for sale to the general public.
At the moment I have just gondola loads available. I have them in sizes to fit Micro-Trains 50 foot fixed end gondolas, Atlas 53.5 foot fixed end gondolas and Roundhouse fixed end 50 foot gondolas...
